I really like FDNY Engine 17, Ladder 18, and Battalion 4 a.k.a Fort Pitt as well as Engine 54, Ladder 4, and Battalion 9 a.k.a. Pride of Midtown Never Missed A Preformance. Also, I like Squad 18, Squad 1, Engine 58, Ladder 26, and Battalion 12. Also, Ladder 3 and Battalion 6 along with Engine 33, Ladder 9, and Battalion 6. I like all of the companies especially the Super Pumper which was extremely useful. P.S. I am 13 years old. Hope y'all had a Merry Christmas.

He worked at the station at 6630 Ridge Ave., Engine 39, Ladder 30. His name is Bill (Poncho) Gonzales. For reasons that I cannot explain right now, I had to leave him. I am a former member of Ladder 18. I escaped the collapse of the WTC Towers by less than a minute. I was heavily exposed to the post collapse contaminants. I have been diagnosed with "dermatomyositis". Are there any individuals that were exposed to the WTC contaminants that have a similar diagnosis? My symptoms are muscle weakness, rash, difficulty rising from the sitting position, climbing stairs, lifting objects while reaching overhead, trouble swallowing, weight loss and shortness of breath. Re article in January 6, 2004 edition of Globe, entitled "9/11 Rug Outrage!" and interview of Firefighter Ed Cutting of Ladder Company 18: A similar situation existed in my neighborhood in Manhattan where a rug-seller used to throw his rugs down on the sidewalk in front of an apartment building, causing a tripping hazzard,and interfering with businesses on the street by blocking their entrances. I contacted the owner of the apartment building, who informed me this individual had threatened his employees. The owner then contacted the police and he hasn't returned since. I suggest that you contact the owner/permit holder of the flea market, the owner of the parking lot, as well as research whether the rug-seller, Kevin Sudeith, has a valid permit to display and sell these rugs. Hello Gentlemen,I live in a small town with a wonderful fire department. I feel foolish asking you these questions but, I don't want to call my fire station and make a big fool out of myself. I thought it would be easier asking people I don't know some questions, less embarrassing. I need some answers because it has been bothering me greatly, so here goes. Is there some kind of program out there for people like me who are handicapped and are home alone alot?I know if I had a fire in the house I could not get out on my own, nor would I try for fear I would fall and be trapped closer to the fire.How would my fire department know I can't get out, and how would they know where my room is etc.This is really brothering me, I am worried. You should really update the pictures. I know there are some hot young firefighters at Fort Pitt and it's criminal to rob us of the right to look at them. Also, you should make the pictures larger than mere headshots, and use fewer articles of clothing in their composition.

Hello, My name is David Brandt, I am 15 years old, My dad was a firefighter for many years until a very serious accident last year, left him confined to a wheel chair..He,s also a US Veteran who served in the Air Force 1st as a SP Then Changed to Firefighting.. He cant leave the house since his accedent, the only thing that seems to cheer him up a little is talking about the fire service and his time in the military. Yesterday (03/16/03) was the St Patrick's Day parade in Birmingham, England. The FDNY were represented by several Firefighters as they were last year. This is just a quick note to say that they are the greatest bunch of people I have had the pleasure of meeting. I think the firefighters were from the Vinegar Hill Gang, Engine 80 & Ladder 23. We went drinking till the early hours of the next morning and they even got up to sing, which they weren't too bad at either. Anyway, this is to say hi to all the Vinegar Hill Gang and the other brave FDNY workers. Keep up the excellent work.

Ladder 18 has a website; this is great news. Elsa and I have a good sized collection of photos and video in our archive of Ladder 18 doing their fire fighting work. I believe we have, somewhere in the archives, Engine 17 footage or photographs . Elsa and I cover the Lower East Side and have seen "the boys" at work on many occasions. Elsa and I are LES documentarians. The "boys" from Ladder 18, in my opinion, are some of the best firefighters in the world. I have documented the Police and Firefighter Olympics, ( I have a brother that is a winter Olympic coach), and I must say, from Elsa and my observation, Ladder 18 is as good as any company at saving lives, property and fighting fires as any company in the world. I have photographed a number of German, Austrian and a couple of Hungarian firefighters. Interesting that I do not recognize everyone in the photographs on the Ladder 18 website. I do not see Hip Shot, or any recognition of Danny DeFranco, or others of merit that have served in that fire house on Pitt Street. But as a Lower East Sider I am happy that we have a company like Ladder 18 protecting our community. Clayton Patterson.

If it wasn't for a badge I have in my possession, I wouldn't have known this site exists. Great photos, interesting guest book entries and the history of Hook and Ladder 18 really enlightened me. I am interested in knowing if anyone in your company can give me any insight on this Badge. The badge is silver in color and measures approximately two inches wide by three inches high. The lettering on the front reads "Veteran Firemen's Association" New York. A fire hose circles the outter perimeter of the badge; a fireman's helmet is on top. On the front appears to be a firebox with the center having a monogram initials (it appears to be) XFX. Extending out of the center of the badge is a ladder, pics and crowbars. There appears to be two horns towards the bottom. The interesting part is on the other side. The badge is inscribed with the words "Hook & Ladder" 18 Wm. Churchill. My Father had a friend who passed away a number of years ago and was in his 90's. This badge was in his possession and was then passed down to me. Does this association still exist? Does anyone know Wm. Churchill? I find this to be quite interesting. I would surely appreciate hearing from you on this and any facts that you may have in regards to where it came from and who owned the badge. Heartfelt appreciation to all of "New York's Bravest". I am so glad to have found your site. Since 9-11, I have always wanted to know more about your company, and to possibly make some sort of contact. I am a (fire/ems/law enforcement) dispatcher with Eagle County Communications in Vail, Colorado. I feel truly blessed and grateful to work with an amazing group of firefighters, paramedics, officers and deputies in a job I love. I happened to have slept through the events of September 11, 2001, after working a late shift the previous day. I awoke at about 6pm to news reports I did not understand, then went into a state of shock that lasted several days - overtime shifts preventing me from really dealing with much of it. This all changed that Friday night as I sat watching news coverage of the WTC and saw a shot of your rig being pulled from the rubble. I burst into tears. I felt as though I had "connected" with you on some level and have always wanted to let you know that you all hold a very special place in my heart. Hey guys I just wanted to say thank you to all of the guys that welcomed my wife and the other family members that came by the station on November 30th. I have been trying to find info on different areas to call for help with group counceling,for 9/11,I am a firefighter in Danbury CT I went down and spent about one month down in ground zero and for somw reason almost a year later the nightmares and images are in my head even stronger than before if there is anyone that can possibly email me some info i would greatly appreciate it,not many of the fire fighters from danbury went down so not many really understand what i am talking about ,i have gone through sessions with our priest but thats not really helping either,I am looking for someone to talk to who can relate,thanks alot in advance and god bless

You all are my heros. I've always had a keen interest in the fire service since I was little (now 27)and since9-11 my feelings are strengthened. I'm travelling to Florida in March 03 and coming over to New York for a longweekend during my visit, so I can pay my respects to the fallen firefighters. I didn't know a single person who died that day, nor do I know a single fireman, policeman, doctor, military, or anyone else connected with ground zero. I came across your site whilst doing a search for something totally unrelated to yourselves and ladder 18. But thought as it appeared in the search window, I would pay you a visit, and give you my fondest wishes after the events that took place last year.I teach people to dive, and on that particular day I was doing some contract work for the British Navy, (my specialty is deep sea/wreck diving). The events of 9/11 will always remain with me, and the look on everyone's face as I surfaced that day. It was around 1pm our time, 9am yours. I was confused as to why everyone looked so sombre and solemn. When I was told what had happened, my first reaction was "how could someone fly a plane into a sky scraper of that magnitude and size. Was the pilot blind?" It was as I was storing my tank that I heard gasps, and the guys shouting "oh my god, this is no accident."At 34 I'm too young to remember the Kennedy assassination, and how it affect so many people around the world. But as I watched the events of that awful day unfold, some one remarked on how this will be an occasion where people will say, "everyone will remember what they were doing as the towers collapsed." And it is sad, but true, it will be one of the greatest events of the twenty first century. I just pray that out of so much pain, we will be able to look back in fifty years and say, "their lives were not taken in vain." That the world collectively can learn from this, and stand united on an anti-terrorism. The NY FD/PD gave gallantly that day, and looked evil right in the eyes. I was going to tell you how brave and unselfish your act was, but I changed my mind. You already know that! It's your job, and it's something you love doing. Much like my own diving. Of which my mother hates, and worries about, but like yourselves she knows it's my life.Well I wont go on any more, except to say, "may all your horizons rise up to great you." Hey, everyone! I am 17 years old and I am also a fire fighter. I am a fire fighter with West End Fire Company, Station 18.(we also have a ladder 18) Well the day of the attack and when I saw how many people had died or were injuried. I thought about how their families might feel. Ever since that day, I am proud to be doing what I love to do and that is fire fighting and I am also proud to be an American. Hello my name is Joanna Armet. I am 20 years old and live in Cocoa, Florida. At the time of the horrible attack I was at my college living a normal 19 year old life, no worries. When I left my class that morning I got into my car around 9:30 when I noticed that all the radio stations were on live brodcast. Like normal I was trying to find music when I relized something horrible has happened...that is when I heard. I had been to New York City only once in my life. The drive from Florida to New York was horrible but when we arrived and were going over that bridge and all those huge buildings and a city that seems to stand for just what America is all about is just amazing. That skyline is far more beautiful than anything else in the world including Florida Disney and Beaches. In New York you see why so many people want to be Americans. The hardwork and sacrifice that you put in to do your parts as Americans is far more than most will do for their own family. Putting the lives of others in front of your own without thinking twice or if this is the time you will go home and kiss your children and wife. It is a very hard consept for me to handle. Until that day that horrible day I only thought of myself and my own family. I know that is a horrible thing to say but that is the truth. As I watched and watched television I couldn't figure out why this happened and I still don't know I don't think any of us can. All I know is that what you did in those building on that day and those many weeks and months after is undiscrible to my twenty year old mind. I sit here today on the eve of September 11 and I pray for all of you and ask god to send his angels over you and your families for like god you have sacrificed many things in the last year and should suffer no more. The reason I wrote and is that this situation has forever changed my life as I know it did yours losing family, brothers and friends.I know that I live in America because we are good and our motto is "Home of the brave" but never have I seen this until I watched it with my own eyes watching all of you give yourself for my country. I am proud to be an Ameriica because of you. I am not scared because in the face of death you still went in and saved so many. I was blind but now I see. Thank you for what you have done for America. Keeping our hope alive. You are my hero.When I come to New York City which I plan on doing soon I will walk proudly down the streets as an American.

As a relative of a retired fire-fighter, I know you guys are not thanked enough for what you do and for putting your lives on the line in order to save other people. I've just had a conversation with Lt. Gary Borega. I tried to schedule an interview with him for the TV news station where I work. He refused, but he told me his and your story. I don't know the words to express what I felt. All of us journalists have used the words brave, self-sacrifice and fearless to describe what you all did on September 11. I like to say to all of the members of Tower Ladder 18 that you have a very nice web site and my condolances go to all of New York's Bravest and New York's Finest who lost their lives on September 11th of 2001, a day that will go down in absolute infamy after what some evil doers did to a few landmarks and taking thousands of lives of inocent Americans who were going about their normal lives when this terrible event happened. I love the new rig that replaced the one that got destroyed and I know how busy everybody is at the station answering alarms and doing your duty to the great city of New York and its great Fire Department.

For years now I have worn a T-shirt, a blue, beat up, 'in rememberence' T-shirt of Thomas Wylie, a fire fighterthat passed years ago during his first year of fighting.I visited Fort Pitt to pay my respects to Tommy, not onlyas a brother fire fighter, but as his cousin. I want to thank all of the guys at 18 that were there on July 21st, who not only invited me into there home, but took the timeto share with me the history and stories of Fort Pitt. I was not a fighter fighter when Tommy died, and I would haveloved to have been able to pick up the phone and swap stories and talk about the things that I did when I was at18. Thank you gentleman, for taking me into your house, formaking me feel like a brother, and for being something that Tommy loved. Dear Ladder 18- I am a huge FDNY supporter that lives in the Midwest. I had the privilege of coming to NYC after the tragic 9/11 and I was able to give counseling and other help to people. My wife and I are seriously contemplatingwhether to take the FDNY test in November and possibly move to New York.Any advice you could give me I would seriously appreciate it. I am currently on an eligibility list in Illinois to be hired for a department, but I may forgo thatif the opportunity is right in New York. Dear Lt. Brown,Last fall, after the events of Sept.11, I was so haunted by all that had happened. I could not go through a day without grieving over what had happened to our country. I desparately needed an 'outlet' for my emotions, and after much prayer, I wrote a song and called it "Hand in Hand."It is dedicated to the lives of those lost on that horrible day, and to those who survived the horror of it. I sent a copy of the song to Katie Couric and Oprah Winfrey, in the hopes, SOMEHOW, they would either help me find a way to have it published, or, if they found no 'merit' in it, they would at least let me know. Well, I have heard nothing from either of the ladies, but I want you to know, the song came from the depths of my heart, and I feel God truly helped me with this. In fact, I feel He led me to do this. If I were to send you this song, a copy of the words, and a cassette of the music, would you be willing to listen to it? If NOTHING else, I would know you men and women of FDNY would know there are those of us who think of you, the risks and the sacrifices that are made every day. Truck to run down course "head-on" crossing timing line 25ft from hydrant. Time will start no later than when front wheels cross this line. Connect suction to an open hydrant, using outlet furthest from arch, take hose and nozzle from rear of truck hose bed and trip target within 6 inches either side of center line of course, 150 ft from hydrant when finish time will be taken!That's just a VERY BRIEF description of the many events that will take place that day. I had the pleasure of meeting some of your members on Sunday, May 26th, 2002, they were by the Intrepid. I just wanted to thank them for being so nice. I had my neice with me and they allowed her to sit up in the truck and took some pictures with her. I had the honor and privilege of visiting with you for a while on Sunday May 19, 2002 when we distributedcards and letters from Einstein Grammer school and Whitney Young High School. As a child of a firefighter who spent his best years in the firehouse on Broome Street, my brother and I share many fond memories, from playing handball behind the building to sharing meals in the kitchen, sitting at the dispatchers desk in front of the big log book with red and blue ink wells, listening to the "bells" and asking their meaning. Good years, great men.

As a student in the US I have come to respect the brothers in America and reilized the unity of the US. To show are appreciation my dance studio is having a contribution dance for the 9/11 victims. Each participent has a shirt that has a persons name that was lost and are hoping that they will be able to contact the family of the person,write them a letter, or even send them the shirt. These 150 students are dancing to the song Angels Among Us. This will be performed in the dark with candles to light up the shirts. The Angels Among US dancers repect the people that put their lives on the line to save another adn truly wish to say 'God Bless America.'

Hey Fort Pitt, I'm a volunteer in my town and I'm training like a madman to be one of you. My best friend and I are gonna take the test next summer and I was wondering if have any advice about the job if you could maybe e-mail me. My father is a Lt. in our town and he took the test three times aced it the first two but, the results wound up being thrown out because of minorities and women on the job. The final time he took it he had bronchitis, and din't do so hot. I wanted to help out after the Eleventh, but my dad said he didn't want me(a green probie) to see what he saw the first time he went down there. I only knew of one firefighter who lost his life, his name was Mike Montesi and he was with Rescue 1. I was in 17 Engine from 1957 to 1977. Just visited the old quarters on March 19, 2002 . It is the only building still standing on the block. Saw the back yard. We had many a bloody volley ball game, the engine always beat the big,bad truckies. Nice page. Thanks for the memories.

I am also a fireschool instructor with the Delaware County Pa Emergency Services Training Center.I have been collecting the WTC stories of FDNY Firefighters and sharing them with all classes I teach at the school. My Dad retired from Ladder 18 in 1981. He is seen in some of the pictures in the history album. His name is Charlie Sullivan as is very well liked. I remember him taking me to the station when i was around 5 years old, and climbing on the trucks, also sliding down the pole, and i remember seeing the huge net leaning against the wall, looked like a trampoline. Hey guys,In early January my daughter Jhane, my husband and I had the honor of visiting your firehouse. My daughter left a skull saver that her 5th grde class from Pensacola Florida had signed. They wanted to show their respect and admiration and try to express some level of thanks for being heroes. We were so honored and overwhelmed by the welcome we received at your House. Thank you so much for taking time out for us and showing us around and making us feel like we could hang out with you guys all day (we thought about it!!). Our mode of transportaion to your house (THANKS RON!!!!) was the coolest. My daughter says the boys really don't believe she rode in the front cab. We tried to express a small amount of gratitude to ya'll and instead we left feeling so honored by the kindness and warmth from you guys. It is easier to sleep each night knowing that there are still truly good and selfless people in the world and right there in New York City!! I wish some of ya'll would come to our beach in Orange Beach Alabama and let our citizens express a bit of gratitude for what you do. We feel that during and after the 9-11 attack in your city the officers of the Police Department, the Fire Department, the Emergency Medical Services, and the NY Port Authority showed astonishing professionalism and dedication to duty. We are trying to put together a display of Department shoulder patches from the Departments that were involved or lost officers during that cowardly attack and the aftermath that followed. Any help that you could give us would be greatly appreciated. If at all possible we would like to obtain shoulder patches that have been worn by officers at some time or another. New patches will be appreciated but the used ones will mean more to our Officers due to the fact that the patch has been worn during the dispatch of Official Duties. As I sat at the firehouse that fateful morning with the rest of "the guys", I saw ya'll go into the W.T.C., not because you "had" to, but because "that is what we do". We watched in terror as the towers collapsed. We all literally cried as we watched the dust clouds rise, and we realized that hundreds of our brothers had been lost, not to mention the thousands of innocent civilians. We have been challenged by the resiliency that you have shown over the last 4 months. The loads of hours that you have spent at Ground Zero searching for survivors, both civilians and your own. I am the wife of a 17 yr. veteran of the Fayette County Fire & Emergency Services Department just south of Atlanta, Georgia. We all felt as if our hearts had sunken to our toes on Sept.11th. My husband felt very uncertain about our future as a country, for we mourned with those who lost their loved ones. Our children asked alot of questions and most certainly was fearful for their dad to go to work but when they saw how you all pulled together with your hearts, and souls to help one another and they soon could understand what we had been trying to tell them about firefighters all these years. My Grandfather was the Fire Chief of Davenport, Iowa from the late 40's through the early 70's. He was just recently diagnosed with dimentia. He doesn't remember too much of his fire days. After watching the actions of the brave members of your great department. Suddenly tears came to his eyes and he began talking about the worst fires he'd been involved with. There was something about watching you all RUN TO THE DISASTER, NOT FROM IT! I always considered him to be one of my heros. He looked at me and almost weeping, he said; "Peter, I'm an old man, who's lived through good, bad, and unhappy events...But, I have lived to tell about it. They weren't able to. They are the hero's, not me." It brought tears to my eyes...To the heros I will admire from the middle of the corn fields of Iowa; my deepest condolences to you and your families for the terrible losses you have faced. My great-grandfather, grandfather, father, and brother were all volunteers in the same small Westchester town. From the time I was 5 and my daddy was chief, to today (almost 17 years later), firemen have always held a special place in my heart. It's funny how things go. Although I started at Fort Pitt when it was on Broome Street, September 11th made me remember all the good times both there and on Pitt St. In fact, my son, Jay Warren, worked there for a while after I left. Being active with the Staten Island Retirees I still see quite a few of the guys who I worked with in the 60s, 70s and 80's. Glad all the brothers are as well as can be expected under the circumstances.

I have never been so moved by any group of men as I have been by the New York Fire Department. I can't say how deeply your losses, and those of the civilians have affected us here ... and we are 1500 miles away. I wanted to let you know that my wife is in New York right now, visiting some friends there. But she is also handing out CDs to the departments around lower Manhattan. It's a song I wrote two days after the tragedy ( doesn't that word seem trivial against what actually happened?) I am selling it down here in Alabama for $ 10.00, with $9.11 being donated to the Sept. 11th Fund. It's not much in the scheme of things, but I hope my small contribution might help someone. It's called "She's Still Standing" and I wrote it ... that it might inspire your men to keep on keepin' on, and to let them know that even though I am so far away, I'm right there with them. ( I wish I actually were, but that is another subject.) Anyway, I can't recall all of the station numbers, but I can say that there will be 50 or so floating around down there near "ground zero" as it is being called. I hope you get a chance to hear it ... and I hope it helps just a little bit. I'd love to know what you think about it. I wish I knew what station she dropped it off at today. It's the one that lost 15 men, or should I say 15 heros, or maybe angels even. I hope and pray that God will guide, bless and keep you all. I know that He has a plan for us, it just doesn't seem very clear right now what that could be. But He IS with us, and He IS with you, and He IS with your men! I hope you all will trust that. I know it must be a hard thing to do.Later, I would like to volunteer to bring a bus load of hard working Alabama construction types to help in the clean up effort. THE CREATION OF THE FIREFIGHTER When the Lord was creating fire fighters, he was into the sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said, "You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one."And the lord said, "Have you read the specification on this person?. My father,Walter E Bryan, served for 20 years on engine 17 and as soon as this tragedy occured I immediately sought to find out that his brothers were all ok. I recieved the most gut wrenching feeling when I saw a photo of Fort Pitt's apparatus being lifted out of the WTC rubble by a crane. Then I thought that apparatus can always be replaced, but human lives can't. Our church and community have been praying for everyone affected by NYC and D.C. and PA events on 9/11. We are proud of our fellow brave citizens who risked their lives to save others and are continuing to do so. We regret some paid the ultimate sacrifice but know now they did not die in vain. They are American heroes that will be remembered for centuries to come, and died in the service of their country, and are bringing unity and patriotism back to this great country. When I saw the picture of truck 18 being plucked from the WTC collapse, it broke my heart. I just wanted to say that hearing all the brothers of truck 18 had survived the collapse sent a chill down my spine. My heart and prayers go out to our brothers that paid the ultimate price. The department has suffered a great loss but with the strength and courage possesed by the men and women of the department, it will still be one of the best departments of the USA. Hi Ray, How's the good life? Hope you're doing well. Believe it or not I'm now the Captain of 18 Truck. (They're letting the inmates run the asylum). Everyone here is doing OK. Rosie just got promoted, Artie retired, and Don Schmidt got out on 3/4s.
